Never Miss Twice

“Never miss twice” is one of my favorite quotes (h/t www.jamesclear.com for the idea). My interpretation of the phrase is having the ability to learn from your mistakes. I believe that it takes the pressure off the idea of “failure” so you don’t feel guilty or beat yourself up over a slip-up. Just don’t make the same mistake twice. Sounds easy enough, right?

James Clear says, “You shouldn’t expect to fail, but you should plan for failure. Take some time to consider what will prevent your habit from happening. What are some things that are likely to get in your way? What are some daily emergencies that are likely to pull you off course? How can you plan to work around these issues? Or, at least, how you can bounce back quickly from them and get back on track?”

It’s such a hopeful, practical idea – especially for all of us that constantly are juggling too many things.

One of the areas I’m pretty serious about this philosophy is in my daily movement.

There are 4 main causes of preventable health issues: smoking, poor nutrition, alcohol excess and lack of physical activity. Why is physical activity is in the same category as smoking and drinking? Could the potential health risks be that dramatic? Oh yeah. Let’s talk about the more serious side of exercise.

"Exercise is the best preventive drug we have, and everybody needs to take that medicine.” - Jordan Metzl, a sports-medicine physician, and author of The Exercise Cure.

People who exercise regularly have a 40-50% reduction in sick days. Feel like going for that slow walk or jog now? According to the Academy of Royal Medical Colleges, “Regular exercise can prevent dementia, type 2 diabetes, some cancers, depression, heart disease and other common serious conditions – reducing the risk of each by at least 30%. This is better than many drugs.”

And the best part, in my opinion, is that this “miracle drug” can be free by stepping outside your door and going for a walk or jog. Just 20 minutes per day, 5 days a week, produces these measurable results. So if you’re feeling like taking advantage of what exercise has to offer, bump up your movement from 20 minutes to 30 minutes per day and enter full-on rockstar mode.

There is so much information to share regarding the benefits of exercise, including that the UK recently declared that lack of exercise was one of the top 4 reasons of death in the UK and that from a public health perspective, cost almost $30 billion (BILLION!) in the UK alone.

As small-business owners, not only are we the CEOs of our own actual for-profit businesses but we are the CEOs of our own lives. One of the most important things we can do is keep ourselves healthy so that we have enough energy to grow and scale our businesses without burn out and daily movement is one of those things.

Never miss twice.
